The End of an Era: In loving memory of Uncle Bill

Simon and Garfunkel asked “where have you gone Joe DiMaggio? A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.”

Joltin Joe epitomized what America was about.

In that same light, I will see myself asking “where have you gone Bill Harder?” For me, Bill, or Uncle Bill as our girls called him” represented everything a husband, father and friend should be. I’m not sure we will see the likes of a man like him again.

As I sat in the pews at his service last Friday looking up at the slide show Nick so lovingly put together, I had to wrestle with the thought of how a man with so much life in him was no more. The smile, the athleticism, the zest for life and family. It was tough to reconcile those photos with the harsh reality he was no longer here.

I always saw a lot of myself in Bill when it came to his desire to squeeze the most out of life and how he strived to make family tradition so important. Maybe that’s why it was extra tough.

But as I searched my heart and my faith, it only gave greater confirmation that his spirit, which was his life force, was gone. His soul was no longer of this world but of heaven.

In the Bible, the word RUACH is used when God breathes into something. RUACH means breath, the breath of life, wind, spirit. This is the same RUACH – breath of life, spirit – that God breathed into Adam’s nostrils and “ the man became a living being [an individual complete in body and spirit]” (Gen. 2:7)

It is described as all that motivates, inspires, encourages, impels, triggers, stirs, provokes, stimulates or activates.  A life force of action verbs. For those of you who knew Bill, apply each one of those verbs to something you thought about him or remember him by. It’s not hard. Although Bill loved to relax, he was a man of action. Like Nick so eloquently described in the story about fixing the boat dock, Bill was always quick to lend a hand or a hug, a lug wrench or a laugh, an ear or a explanation.

The Ruach is what remains. The earthly body returns to dust as the Word says, from dust we came and to dust we shall return. But God’s handiwork, his most perfectly crafted creation, the BREATH OF LIFE, the RUACH, that goes on to the next world.

So when Chris or Nick or Marie or myself one day wonder, where have you gone Bill Harder, we must know that it is to a better place, where his Ruach is still his Ruach and where a hundred years feels like a minute.

When we see him again, and we will, to us it may have felt like forever, but for him it’ll be like yesterday.

Until then, every time I see an anchor or feel the salty air of a sea breeze, I’ll lovingly and respectfully take a moment and say hello to my old friend Uncle Bill.

We Love You

David, Angelike, Ella and Phoenix.

Young Bill and a family picnic 1952

A classic photo found from long ago, of young Bill standing tall with his family and relatives (names below photograph) at a summer picnic. Everyone loved little Bill, and he entertained us of all ages. As cousins, our visits with Bill were always a sure fun time.

Our Thoughts and Prayers Are With You

Chris and Nick, I am truly sorry for the loss of a man who meant so much to you.  Even though I never had the opportunity to meet Bill, I can only imagine the impact he had in raising 2 great human beings like you.  You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Memories of My First Cousin Bill

My memories of Bill are different from most of yours because I was his older first cousin, eight years older in fact, and I knew him as a baby and watched him grow, saw him play with my brother Paul and his older brother Pete.  The three boys played together as they grew, and I either played with them or oversaw their shenanigans and tried to keep them out of trouble.  Bill was such a cute boy!  The photo shows Bill’s dad, Russell holding him at a family picnic at his parent’s home in Homewood, IL. I’m the girl in front and Paul and Pete next to Bill.  Next to me is his Aunt Lucille-my mom then our Great Uncle Lee and on his left is my Aunt Libby-Pete and Bill’s mom.  Far end of table is our Great Aunt Betty.  1950-1951 is my guess.                       Relatives from my family and Libby’s family and Russell’s and Lucille’s family always got together for the big holidays.  Great food from all the women cooks, pictures and/or movies taken by the men and  laughing and talking all the time!  At that time all the family lived in WI or IL.  Our Grma and Grpa Harder had a place on Lake Winnebago near Fond du Lac and we would take vacations there in summer and sometimes overlap a few days.  More fun!  Then came high school and college and we cousins all eventually graduated in our own interest area.  More parties!  And then I married and Bill and all his family were there.  I think Bill was finishing high school.  Then there was the Service that most males were supposed to enter.  Girls didn’t do that often in those days.  Bill chose the Merchant Marines and started getting recognized.  Then he worked on designing yachts for the rich, making improvements and also working on military ships.  Did a great job!  He even developed a new type of propeller for some of the ships.                           And somewhere in there he met and married Marie, the love of his life!  More parties!  And of course we were having babies!  More to celebrate!  And the last big affair was Bill’s 70th birthday party in CA.  I flew in from AZ and stayed with Paul and Ellen and drove to the party with them and met Chris and Nick whom I had not seen in years!  Such fun!!  When we would visit Bill and Marie when in WI Bill would take us for nice boat rides in Sturgeon Bay!  And then there were Marie’s dinners!  I was so shocked and saddened to hear of his passing, but I have all my memories!!

Outstanding Classmate

Bill was a great classmate and friend during our four years at the US Merchant Marine Academy.  His outlook on life was positive, his humor and smile infectious and his willingness to help memorable.  Together we enjoyed some wonderful adventures away from Kings Point to perform concerts with the Glee Club in places like NYC and DC.  Bill’s departed us exactly 50 years and a day after our graduation and commissioning and will be missed by the many classmates who looked forward to spending time together this fall at our 50th reunion.  Wishing Bill’s family fair winds and following seas in these turbulent times.

Bill was such a bright light in this world

I am so thankful for the time I got to spend getting to know Bill and the rest of the Harder family.  Bill was one of the happiest people I have ever encountered in my lifetime – loved life and his family.  I will cherish the conversations and knowledge I gain from him back all those years ago!   Sending so much love to the Harder’s as they learn to navigate this life without him in the flesh but I know he will never be far.  Many hugs to you all!
